Donmar Eekhout – DonCamp

That Donmar initially chose to become a captain was hardly a coincidence. From an early age he had something “with water and boats. At the age of 7 he already bought his first sailing boat. He enjoyed sailing so much that he ‘always wanted something else. ‘That’s how it came about that at the age of 14 I bought a hull tugboat (Amsterdammertje) of 10 meters. Donmar then taught himself ‘all the skills to refurbish and restore this Amsterdammertje to its former condition.’

Doncamp boat building, expedition company

In 2016 Donmar started building an off road camper to take his family on vacation with this, the construction of this camper was so successful and the overlap with yacht building was in many ways present that Donmar developed a new passion for this.

In 2018 it became clear that the work in its current form as under Ship Adjustments was no longer satisfactory at the Arnhem water sports center. in June 2018 Donmar started his current company DonCamp where he can further expand his camper construction and also continue the passion for electric drives.

A 5-Step Project Orientation for A Custom Overland Truck

For most people who’re starting overlanding, buying an expedition truck from Expeditionmeister is the first step of the journey. However, there are many who like to take a longer route by building their own custom overland truck.

Building a custom overland truck can be a fun and exciting project, but it also requires careful planning and consideration of several factors. Otherwise, you’ll just end up wasting a lot of time and money, while others who bought pre-built vehicles will be enjoying the trail.

Here’s a basic game plan to help guide you through the process:

Step 1: Determine your budget

Before you start planning your overland truck build, it’s important to determine your budget. This will help you make decisions about what components and features you can afford. Remember, you should be balanced in terms of requirements.

This isn’t just to conserve your budget, but it’s to help you recover your investment as well. Experts say that it can take a minimum of five years to get a return on what you’ve spent on building your custom truck.

It is common for first-time builders to spend everything in their budget just to end up with a prototype. It’s called such because this may or may not be suitable for the overlanding journey yet. And even this can take around three-plus years if you don’t work on it full-time.

Step 2: Choose a suitable base vehicle

The base vehicle will be the foundation of your overland truck build, so it’s important to choose one that is suitable for your needs. Consider factors such as payload capacity, off-road capabilities, fuel efficiency, and maintenance costs.

Getting back to Step 2, you must keep your budget in mind. It wouldn’t be a recommended decision to go for a brand-new base vehicle. You can get a two- to three-year-old used vehicle which will feel new and will be well-priced.

Getting a very old vehicle should be fine it has been maintained well and is known for its reliability. However, even the most reliable base vehicles can have bad years. This is why it wouldn’t hurt to do a bit of research. Find more info here

Step 3: Design the layout and features

Once you have a suitable base, design the layout and features of your overland truck. This means deciding on things like the size and configuration of the living quarters, the type of kitchen and bathroom facilities, the electrical and plumbing systems, and the storage options.

Step 4: Select the components and materials

With your design in place, you can begin selecting the components and materials you will need to build your overland truck. This will include things like insulation, flooring, walls, cabinets, appliances, solar panels, batteries, and water tanks. Get good quality stuff when you can and where it’s absolutely needed.

Step 5: Build or modify the truck

With all the components and materials in hand, you can begin building or modifying your overland truck. This may involve cutting, welding, and fabricating parts of the truck to fit your design and installing the components and materials you have selected.

Remember that you shouldn’t make the electronic and the plumbing systems too complicated. They’ll be irreparable in case things go south. If you don’t have any DIY experience, tutorials can help. If you still have a hard time, hire a professional to get the job done right.

Conclusion

This was the project orientation process on how to build an overland truck. Once you’re done, you can test and refine the vehicle. Ensure that everything is working by taking it on a few short trips. It’ll help identify any issues or areas that need improvement, so you can refine the vehicle.

Why Are Mitsubishi Fuso 4×4 Expedition Trucks So Popular in Europe?

Below, we take a closer look at these and other specifications and explore why Mitsubishi Fuso for sale in Europe are coveted by overlanders.

Engine and Transmission of Mitsubishi Fuso 2021

The 3.0-liter Mitsubishi turbocharged diesel engine produces an impressive 430 Nm of torque at 1,600 RPM. With 175 horsepower under the hood, or rather, the cabin of the Fuso truck camper, you wouldn’t create a bottleneck on a busy road and will keep up with the traffic.

Paired with the manual transmission, the Mitsubishi expo truck boosts confidence on difficult terrain while allowing for satisfying performance on long, steep grades. Meanwhile, although Mitsubishi’s proprietary Duonic dual-clutch automated transmission may not be the best solution for rough off-road adventures, it gives the truck great performance during on-pavement driving, enabling fast acceleration and smooth shifts.

Mitsubishi Fuso Off-Road Capabilities

When driving off-pavement, the all-wheel-drive version of the Fuso shifts well into 4WD, offering a confident and steady ride. Equipped with a self-locking differential in the rear axle, the truck provides peace of mind on difficult terrain, boosted by having enough torque at low RPMs.

The flexibly mounted cabin effectively absorbs shocks while ensuring higher stability during off-roading, thanks to a reasonable degree of flex. Meanwhile, the stock 16-inch tires, which can be easily increased to 17 inches or more, strike a good balance between on-pavement and off-payment performance while providing enough clearance for most terrains in Europe.

Fuel and Range

Expo trucks require considerable amounts of fuel, and Fuso 4×4 is no exception. Still, even with its single fuel tank of 250 liters of diesel, the truck offers enough autonomy and mileage on one tank for the most overlanding adventures, unless you are looking for the most extreme journeys, where the dual tank would be required.

While fuel consumption is significantly affected by the configuration of your expo rig and its equipment, as well as the type of road, the sea level, and other driving conditions, some base figures can still be kept in mind. For example, on a test run described on the official Fuso website for the Philippines, the 3.0 L Fuso Canter in utility vehicle configuration showed quite a remarkable 8.8km per liter or 11.3 liter per 100 km. Meanwhile, owners’ tests for the Mitsubishi Fuso 4×4 version on mixed roads resulted in a consumption of around 20 liters per 100 km.

Dimensions: How Big Is Big?

Although on the face of it, the Mitsubishi Fuso is a large expedition truck, in reality, it is still a compact overlanding vehicle. With a length of 7.22 m, a width of 2.20 m, and a height of around 3.28 m, depending on the configuration of your rear cabin, the Fuso off-road camper is comparable to the extended versions of Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit.

That said, Fuso fits most trails nicely thanks to its compact dimensions and tighter turning circle. With sufficient clearance and a curb weight of 5,870 kg, the truck offers excellent roadability both on paved roads and in off-road conditions.

Camper Box, Accommodations and Equipment

Thanks to its dimensions, Fuso can offer comfortable accommodations, a great amount of storage, and space for equipment and systems with all the conveniences of a spacious tiny house. Its chassis offers exceptional adaptability for most configurations and can accommodate a voluminous camper box.

For example, a Mitsubishi Fuso 4×4 Expedition vehicle featured on Expeditionmeister offers a camper box with a 4,500  x 2,200  x 2,200 mm camper with a GRP sandwich element having a wall thickness of 50 mm. The camper offers large space to accommodate a single twin bed of 1,850 x 1,100 mm and 2 rear bunk beds of 2,000 x 900 mm with a seating group that can be easily converted into another single twin bed.

Equipment for Overlanding with Mitsubishi Fuso

The list of technical equipment on the Fuso expo truck from our catalogue is impressive and worth a separate note. Featuring an independent power supply for the superstructure with a large lithium-ion battery, solar modules, air heater, large water tank and hot water boiler, and frost-proof water installations, the vehicle provides for long trips in remote areas in full comfort.

Conveniences on Fuso Expo Truck

The Fuso expo version features a gas hob, fridge and freezer, cabinetry, and a Corian worktop, offering a spacious and functional kitchen space.

Combined with a vanity, a shower tray and a cassette toilet, the camper makes you at home wherever you roam.

What Is It Like to Drive Mitsubishi Fuso Truck in Europe?

Overall, overlanders are content with both on-pavement and off-pavement  Fuso rides on European trails. The cab-over design combined with light power steering allows for tighter turning circles and easier maneuvering. Meanwhile, a longer wheelbase provides for a smoother ride and relieves the fatigue of driving a hoodless truck with the axle under the driver’s seat.

The 8th generation Fuso provides drivers with additional leverage thanks to disc brakes for the front and rear wheels. Coupled with an exhaust brake system slowing down the vehicle in the lower gear and an anti-lock braking system, the Fuso provides the driver with extra control and peace of mind.

Summing It Up

The Fuso truck camper is a solid choice for overlanders in Europe for both on-road and off-road adventures. Spacious yet compact, torqued-up yet fuel-efficient, the Mitsubishi Fuso camper is a perfect companion on a long journey.

For the moment, Expeditionmeiter features several Fuso overland campers available for sale in Europe. If you are interested in a Fuso truck in Europe with a configuration close to what is described in this article, don’t miss the Mitsubishi Fuso 4×4 camper for sale from our catalogue.

Check Out These Hot Tips for Camping and Overlanding Safely This Summer!

Camping is one of the best ways to spend time with your loved ones, don’t you think? It is amazing to be able to enjoy the days in the middle of nature and the nights under the stars. But doing so does not always end up to be an amazing experience, since many things can go wrong on a camping or overlanding trip. For instance, unpleasant weather conditions and bugs can significantly hinder your plans if you are not properly prepared for your trip.

Since we don’t want that to happen, we share with you some hacks so that you can grab your tent and sleeping bag and go on a safe yet exciting new adventure this summer. You’ll thank us later!

Advantages of Camping at the End of Summer

Summer camping is a fantastic idea but here is why you should consider doing it towards the end of the summer season:

  • Empty roads and campsites

As many people will have already finished their vacations, you will save kilometers of traffic and will be able to travel in peace. Furthermore, in peak summer season, most campsites are usually packed, which is not the case at the end of summer. There will be greater availability and more choices if you decide to go on your camping and overlanding trip once the madness has passed.

  • Enjoy the beaches and mountains without masses of tourists

There will be fewer crowds at different destinations and you will be able to move more freely. Moreover, you won’t find long queues, nor will you have to book months in advance, since camping at the end of summer is synonymous with relaxation and time.

  • Lower prices

At the end of the season, you no longer have to fight with tourists for parking spaces or tickets. Plus, you save money, since many destinations already start their low season prices at the end of summer.

  • Enjoy authentic experiences

While in the initial months of summer, it seems that there are only tourists, at the end of the season, normality returns to the different camping destinations and the native population. This way, you can authentically discover the regions and everything that they have to offer.

Tips for Camping in Summer

Whether it’s your first time or you’re an experienced camper, the following tips will help you avoid small accidents during your camping trip:

  • Find the right place

A lot depends on the area or the campsite itself. Having overly noisy neighbors, little shade, or a long way to get to the water can be quite annoying in the long run. Take your time and look around to find what best suits your needs. Keep in mind that the sun changes position throughout the day and the trees and bushes can give you more shade. Also remember that it is important to take into account where the bathrooms are to avoid any inconvenience throughout your trip.

  • Lavender to keep mosquitoes at bay

Although there are several insect repellent sprays in the market, their components raise concern among campers. Surely, the best way to keep bugs away is to use lavender essential oil because it is absolutely safe for children and babies. However, it must be used well-diluted or mixed. Since every inch of skin surface must be treated, it is best to mix lavender oil into a body lotion.

  • Shade for everyone

Forgot your umbrella? Don’t want to spend all day indoors? You can easily protect yourself and your companions from the sun using a large cloth, 2 stones and 2 strong sticks. You just have to put the sticks in the ground with a little less distance than the length of the fabric. Tie 2 corners of the fabric to the poles, pull the remaining 2 corners diagonally to the ground and hold them down using a large stone.

  • Hot tea for the heat

Even if you feel like a sip of cold water while lying on the beach, it’s best to control your impulses. Our body consumes energy while converting cold drinks into body heat, and that is why you feel hotter than before. So, you might reconsider the desire for a cocktail in the evening. Instead, make 2 liters of hot tea in the morning, put it in a thermos and take it with you to the beach or while hiking in the mountains. Hydration is key when you are out camping.

  • Emergency kit for campers

Many little things can ruin the day if you are not well-prepared for them. Whether it’s a blister on your foot, a broken nail, or a hole in your pants. A well-thought out emergency kit has saved many a camping trip. In your emergency bag, you can store everything you might need in case of small emergencies. What to include in it? The important ones are a sewing kit, analgesics, charcoal tablets, a nail clipper, a pocket knife, tape, safety pins, meters of rope, a lighter and sunscreen.

  • Consider a portable battery for your gadgets

Just because you are in the lap of nature does not mean you have to be disconnected. A portable battery (there are solar ones too) to recharge your phone or tablet is always an excellent companion. In addition, it will help you power other devices, such as a headlamp. Choose one that has at least 10,000 milliamps of capacity.

  • Don’t forget to protect yourself from the night cold

In many places, temperatures can drop at sunset, getting quite chilly by dawn. Therefore, bring some warm clothing and blankets for the night, especially if you want to enjoy the experience of sleeping while watching the stars.

  • Air your Campervan

Another key point to combat high temperatures in your campervan trip is to properly ventilate the vehicle. Keep in mind that air currents will always be beneficial to control the temperature of the cabin of the campervan or overland expedition vehicle. Open windows and skylights when the outside temperature is lower than the inside. This will create a ventilation system that will reduce the thermal sensation. In case of intense heat, open the windows and skylights that are not exposed to the sun.

  • Adapt to the Vehicle

If you are a regular user of recreational vehicles, you can skip this point. Otherwise, it is worth remembering that all camping vehicles require completely different driving than a car, no matter how large it may be. Above all, you need a period of adaptation to the specific overland vehicle you own. This is mainly because they are larger and heavier and, among many other things, they generate much greater inertia than a car and so, take a longer distance to stop. Adaptation is even more necessary if a caravan is towed, especially in situations of side wind as it could be difficult to maneuver it in twisty urban environments.

  • Plan the route

With an overland vehicle, you neither drive nor travel as fast as you do with a car. Also, you cannot park and spend the night anywhere you like. If that’s your idea, chances are that you’ll come back from your vacation with a fine in your pocket. So, as important as the final destination (a campsite area could be ideal) is, the journey is also a vital consideration. So, it is advisable to know the areas where you could take breaks and potential campervan parkings that you will find along your route.

  • Check the vehicle

Although there are people who use their campers very often, there are others who only use them for big vacations, which means restarting a vehicle that has not been on the road for a long time. In addition to taking care of the cleanliness of the interior and exterior, it is not a bad idea to check the tyre pressure, carry out a small mechanical check, check the stabilizers (if equipped), take a look at the sealing of the doors and windows, clean and disinfect the fresh water tank as well as inspect faucets and gas connections.

  • Children and pets on board

Although moving like this may seem like an adventure or something fun, especially at first, it is true that if you travel with children, you have to be especially proactive. Bringing story books, painting equipment or a tablet on board so that they can watch their favorite cartoons can be a good idea. Because if not, the trip (and stay) can prove to be very long. The same thing is true for pets. If you travel with a dog, for example, don’t skimp on stops as it gives them a chance to stretch their legs.

  • Security

Last but not least, we must emphasize that it is essential (as well as mandatory) that everyone travels in their properly secured seat. Likewise, it doesn’t hurt to watch how you place your luggage, so that it doesn’t move during the journey. Another aspect that is sometimes overlooked is that if you are going to carry something placed outside the vehicle, it must be correctly secured and marked. For example, a bicycle must be on its bike rack and the V-20 sign must be clearly visible.

Most Important Questions and Answers for Summer Camping

How to Camp in the Heat?

How to Camp Comfortably?

Camping comfortably requires good planning. Choose a suitable place, carry the necessary equipment to protect yourself from the weather, choose an adequate tent, prepare nutritious meals and carry enough water to stay hydrated. Finally, select a clean place far from civilization to enjoy nature.

What to Keep in Mind When Camping?

When camping, it is important to choose a safe place that is away from any threats to your safety, such as running water, nearby roads, and wild animals. Although it might seem daunting at first, all you need is some preparation and planning to have a great time. Also, make sure that the place you camp in is left spotless when you leave. Leaving no trace of your presence at a campsite is an unspoken yet important rule that all campers should adhere to.

In any case, if you follow the tips and hacks mentioned above, you are bound to have a great time camping and overlanding this summer. If you are looking for good overlanding vehicles to get you sorted for the next trip this summer, feel free to get in touch with us at Expedition Meister!

Custom Vs. Pre-Built: Pros and Cons for Your Expedition Vehicle

Introduction

Owning a vehicle can come with loads of benefits, especially if you live in an area where the public transportation system is inefficient or infrequent. While being the owner of an expedition vehicle can be a status symbol for some, for others, it is actually a way to move around with flexibility so that you do not have to depend on others to do things. This holds especially true if you have wanderlust and you yearn to explore novel places on long road trips.

If you’ve been thinking of getting yourself a new set of wheels, you must take a number of things into consideration. One of the first and foremost factors is whether to buy a custom or a pre-built car. Both alternatives come with their own advantages and disadvantages.

In this blog, we shed some light on the pros and cons of each and also suggest a few vehicles that are worth considering for your next overland adventure. Regardless of whether you are a seasoned overlander or new to the scene, we are sure you will be able to make a good choice after you are through reading this blog.

What are Custom Expedition Vehicles?

Customising a vehicle is creating something unique and tailored, as well as beautiful. No two personalised vehicles are the same. This is why it’s difficult to say exactly what a custom vehicle entails. The price depends mainly on the vehicle and the material used. There is no standard price for high-quality, professional customisation. It’s like commissioning a work of art. So, the price may vary considerably and will depend on the specifications you provide.

In addition, a custom car has been modified and adapted to its owner’s specific preferences and needs. This could involve changes to the design and performance, interior and exterior features, as well as any other customisation desired. In short, it’s like having a unique and exclusive car that represents you.

Pros

       1. Greater satisfaction when driving a unique and personalised car

Have you ever dreamed of having a car that reflects your personality and unique style? Customising a new car can turn that dream into reality. There is nothing like getting behind the wheel of a car that has been custom-designed according to your tastes and preferences. Personalisation allows you to add details that make you feel special and different from other drivers.

Customising a new vehicle is not only about aesthetics; it also involves improving the functionality and comfort of the automobile. You can choose everything from the body colour to the interior details, such as the seats, steering wheel and audio systems. You can even incorporate cutting-edge technology, such as touch screens, GPS navigation systems, and security cameras. Customisation allows you to adapt the car to your individual needs and preferences.

A custom-built vehicle can also be a way to stand out on the road. With so many of the same vehicles on the streets, customising yours allows you to do something different and attract attention. You can add unique elements, such as decorative vinyl, custom wheels or LED lights, that will make your vehicle stand out from the crowd. Additionally, as it is unique, you are less likely to confuse it with other similar vehicles.

        2. Increase in vehicle resale value

One of the most compelling reasons to customise a new car is to increase its resale value. By adding modifications and improvements, you are increasing its appeal and exclusivity, which can result in a higher value when you decide to sell it in the future. Potential buyers will be willing to pay more for a customised car because they perceive it to be unique and special.

Additionally, getting a custom-built vehicle can help keep it in better condition over time. By installing high-quality components and making performance upgrades, you’re ensuring your vehicle stays in top condition, which can also impact its resale value. Buyers will be willing to pay a higher price for a car that has been well cared for and has quality upgrades.

In addition to personal satisfaction, customising an expedition vehicle can have financial benefits. Although it can increase the initial price of the vehicle, it can also increase its resale value. A customised, well-maintained vehicle can be more attractive to potential buyers, allowing you to recoup some of the investment made in customisation.

Whether you prefer an elegant and sophisticated style, or a more daring and striking one, customisation allows you to create a car that suits you. Plus, in a world where all new vehicles seem to be the same, having a customised one allows you to stand out and attract attention. It is essentially a way to distinguish yourself and show your individuality through your car.

Cons

       1. Breakdowns

Many of the mechanical modifications that are needed in a custom-built vehicle have consequences that someone inexperienced can overlook. The clearest example is the reprogramming of the control unit, which if carried out by someone who is not thorough with the job, could end up being a disaster in the future. Breakdowns might become a common thing for you and no car owner wants that.

       2. Price

Although the investment in customising a vehicle could end up rewarding you in the future if you consider selling it, the initial cost could be a bit steep. Hence, it is important to weigh all the pros and cons and check if you have the budget to go through with a custom-built vehicle for your upcoming overland adventures.

What are Pre-Built Expedition Vehicles?

A pre-built vehicle is put together in modules, shipped, and then assembled at the desired location. Contrary to custom-built vehicles, these are standard cars that have been built by the company without any personalisation or customisation by owners.

Pros

      1. No customisation stress

The best thing about pre-built expedition vehicles is that you do not have to worry about getting them personalised. Most car owners care little to nothing about getting a vehicle custom-built as opposed to enthusiasts for whom it is often an exciting challenge. That said, if you can’t be bothered with customising your vehicle or the process seems quite complex to you, then going with a pre-built one is probably the best choice for you.

       2. You can get your hands on a pre-built car faster than a custom-built one

We live in an ever-evolving world where everything is rapid and convenience-oriented. Most people do not have the patience to wait around for a car to be customised according to a set of precise specifications. Also, delays are inevitable when it comes to custom-built vehicles as there is quite a bit of paperwork involved in addition to a longer turnaround time for the delivery of the vehicle. All these issues can be avoided if you just go for a pre-built vehicle that meets most of your requirements. So, if you are in a hurry and don’t want to wait to get your wheels, pre-built vehicles are the best option.

        3. You can check out the available options online or at the nearest store of a car dealer

As mentioned above, technology is constantly developing and most car dealers try to make use of it to stay on top of their game. So, it can stand you in good stead to check out the different car dealer websites online like ours or visit a store near you so that you can make sure you get exactly what you need. Unfortunately, this is not the case if you want a custom-built vehicle because you will have to wait to see the final product. After all, the process of customisation can take a bit of time.

Cons

      1. The designs might not fit your precise needs.

A major problem with pre-built vehicles is that they are standard builds and might not suit an individual with precise needs regarding the specifications of a vehicle. For example, you might find that the pre-built vehicle does not provide sufficient storage for all your gear. If this specification is a priority for you, you might be better off going for a custom-built car.

       2. The aesthetics of the vehicle could be different to your expectations.

Another hurdle in buying a pre-built vehicle might be its aesthetics. The interior colours of most pre-built vehicles are fixed and you do not get a lot of choice regarding their design either. Although some models might have slightly different colours, it is mostly shades of brown or beige that you will be stuck with. Hence, if that is an important consideration when buying a vehicle, you might want to get yours personalised.

In any case, now that you know the advantages and disadvantages of both options, you can make a well-informed decision about your next purchase. It is noteworthy that buying a vehicle is usually a once-in-a-lifetime thing (unless you can afford to change cars frequently), hence, you must weigh the pros and cons of both alternatives carefully before you make a choice.

Off-Road RVs and Campers: Choosing the Right Vehicle for Your Overland Adventures

That said, choosing the right vehicle for your off-road journey can be a bit more complicated. There are so many options to choose from these days that it can leave you quite puzzled when you are on the lookout for finding the right one for your overland adventures. The type of vehicle you choose would decide how easily you can travel in an environment without proper roads or pavements. This is precisely why it is the most important decision you will make for your future when it comes to off-road traveling.

Travelling is cool, and you know it. But Buying a camper or an RV is even cooler, and today, we will explain the differences between traveling in a camper or an RV and their advantages and disadvantages. First, let us tell you the great benefit of off-road RVs and campers:: FREEDOM.

This includes the freedom to choose:

  • The Destination. And improvise as you go. If you like a town better where you didn’t expect to stop, you can now stay there longer.
  • The Visits. You will no longer have to worry about calmly enjoying a museum. You choose the city or town you want to go to, but also the times at which to visit the monumental or touristic places.
  • The Dates. You can choose the travel dates that work for you, regardless of whether it is high season, or whether they charge a fortune for a hotel or apartment. You also don’t have to worry if the dates they give you for vacation at work do not align with the recommendations of travel agencies.
  • Travel Alone. If you like the autonomy that comes with travelling alone, you can now do it without any problems. Also, god forbid the world should have to go through another pandemic or lockdown, you will not be confined to one place as long as you have your RV or camper with you.
  • Food decisions. Another thing that you needn’t worry about is whether you or someone in your family will find menus that you like or are adapted to any food intolerance you might have. Why? Because you will have your own mobile home and you can cook or bring your own food without any hassle.

Basically, with an off-road vehicle, you can have an unforgettable experience, enjoying the small details; all of this without the stress of missing a plane, train or bus, without delays, without disappointment with hotels and without last-minute surprises.

Now, the time has come to share the differences between travelling in off-road RVs and campers

What are Overland Vehicles?

Overland vehicles are a type of off-road vehicle that is slowly but surely making its presence known throughout the world, especially among lovers of adventure, nature and unique trips. In addition, although there are many models in markets worldwide, there are surely some that you have already had your eye on.

Overland vehicles are usually of the 4×4 type, with a high-power engine (between 140 and 177 HP), with very good suspension and all-terrain wheels, prepared to face any difficulty you may encounter on the road. Moreover, despite their not excessively large size, they have a very attractive interior capacity, which gives them great habitability. That is to say, with an overland vehicle, you will have a perfect ally if what you want is to go camping, travel high mountain roads, or visit practically any place without the need to look for a hotel. These vehicles have become famous for being ideal for expeditions in deserts or mountains.

Furthermore, you can park them in any parking lot that has large spaces or in a viewpoint, campsite or space where camping is allowed, without having to look for special parking spaces. Their dimensions are not tremendously large as they are usually around just over 6 metres long and a little less than 3 metres wide.

What is the Difference Between a Camper and an RV?

First of all, you must be very clear about the differences between campers and RVs, both when buying them and when going on vacation with them, since driving a camper is not the same as driving an RV.

  • Motorization

Both campers and RVs are a house on wheels, but while campers need a vehicle to tow them, RVs have their own engine and driving cabin, i.e., the vehicle is a part of the package.

  • Parking Lot

On the other hand, campers cannot be parked freely on any street or public place, but you must go to a campsite to spend the night legally. On the contrary, RVs, being vehicles, can be parked on the street. That said, in this case, for reasons such as being able to connect them to electricity or water and waste disposal services, it would also be advisable to opt for a campsite or areas enabled for campers.

Normally, camper users or owners tend to choose a holiday destination where they will spend a long time since they place their vehicles on the campsite and spend a week or two there. Some people even place their campers on a campsite at the beginning of summer and leave it there during the hot months so that they can go repeatedly to enjoy a getaway without having to carry the camper on their backs and set it up and take it down every time they come and go. In these cases, the trailer is usually left in place and a tent or awning comes out of the camper and provides a very useful space next to the vehicle to place a table, eat, etc.

For their part, those who opt for an RV tend to be people who move more often, who go out on weekends to different destinations or who choose to go see a certain area without having to look for a specific place to park.

  • Prices

Campers, since they do not incorporate a motor vehicle, are usually more accessible and economical and that is one of the great factors to take into account when choosing one type of transport or another. RVs are usually at least twice as expensive as campers, since the price of the van on which they go must be added to the price of the camper.

There are also many second-hand ones in good condition that you can consider buying as they do not suffer as much wear and tear as RVs. You can find good models of second-hand campers for around 15,000 euros, while if you are looking for second-hand RVs that are in good condition and generate confidence, it is not easy to find them for less than 30,000 euros. It is one of the big differences between campers and RVs and, although there are always purists who love campsites and want to install their RVs there, if the price of both were the same, a vast majority of people would choose RVs.

Pros and Cons of Each Type

Another element that must be considered is safety when driving: an RV is safer than a camper. As it is a trailer that is connected to the main vehicle, it cannot travel at more than 90 kilometres per hour on any road, while an RV can reach 120 km/hour as if it were a car.

However, when we arrive at our destination, the situation changes: the camper is placed at the campsite where you are going to stay and allows you to travel with your vehicle to get to know the area. In the case of an RV, this is not the case, since if you move it from the place where it is parked, the space will be available to other travellers and you might have trouble finding a suitable parking space again. This requires you to travel with bicycles or a motorcycle attached to the RV to be able to move around the area and enjoy our getaway if you do not want to depend on public transportation.

One of the advantages of RVs is that they allow their occupants great independence in terms of water, electricity and wastewater, since they have standard tanks of at least 100 litres of clean water. For their part, campers are more independent because they do not usually carry water tanks and so, they need to connect to the services offered by the campsites as soon as they are set up.

Accommodation and Storage

Travelling in a camper or an RV gives you freedom of movement that is difficult to match. If you want to stop in the middle of the mountain to enjoy a sunrise, you can do it in total comfort. If you want to take a route through all the beaches and stop in different towns – no problem. Additionally, you won’t have to worry about booking hotels in the places you pass through because you will already take your accommodation with you.

Returning to the question of storage and what we can take on board, by going with this type of vehicle, you can take bicycles, skis and even surfboards with you without any major problems. They are ideal for adventurous people and nature lovers. Imagine the pleasure of arriving at a natural setting and being able to go out with your children on a bicycle with total freedom. Or go to a beach and enjoy surfing or any other water sport comfortably.

The interior layout is usually very similar in both cases, with beds, appliances, etc. placed similarly. Logically, in the case of RVs, the driving area must be added, but in both models, the central area serves as a living room during the day and as a bedroom at night.

The windows and roof skylights are also similar: they have blackouts to prevent sunlight from entering at dawn and mosquito nets to prevent insects from entering the interior. In addition, both campers and RVs can have air conditioning distributed throughout the rooms, although this depends on the extras that each person wants to add to their vehicle when buying it.

Those who are passionate about campers are usually also passionate about camping. This is an original and fun way to spend your vacation. The little ones can enjoy the pool, games and all kinds of activities, and the adults will be able to reconnect with nature and enjoy the experience of travelling.

Final Words

Enjoy this new adventure and the freedom to go wherever you want whenever you want with your friends or family! It is time to enjoy the road and a new way of understanding the need and pleasure of travelling. But the question remains: now that you know how to go about choosing between an RV and a camper, how do you decide which one is the perfect fit for you? Well, it totally depends on your preferences and the list of priorities you have for a vehicle for your overland adventures. While for some, the price of a product is of paramount importance and a deciding factor, for others, things like convenience or storage might be more important.

A Journey Through Time and Memories

Back in the early 80s, overland travel was a different beast, and it was the vibrant era of Bedford vehicles. One owner reminisces, “My journey with overland travel began in the early 80’s when I owned another Bedford, this time a baby one, a bright blue Bedford CF.” Those were the days of rebuilding, of setting out with nothing but a map and a tank full of dreams. Fast forward to today, and with BOB popping up online, the choice becomes not just a practical one, but a passionate one.

Embrace the joy of BOB

BOB isn’t just a vehicle; it’s a mood lifter, a conversation starter, and a joy amplifier. “I love BOB because you cannot be sad in him,” an owner exclaims. The cab becomes a cocoon of happiness as you hit the road, igniting a symphony of reactions – from flashing lights to amused stares. Picture this: a woman driving BOB, her blonde hair catching the sunlight, faces around her lighting up with smiles. BOB isn’t just photogenic; it’s a scene-stealer.

Unraveling the Tapestry of Memories

One memory stands out like a beacon, painted in the vivid hues of the Massive Central in France during Autumn. “My favorite trip was driving through the Massive Central in France in Autumn. I hadn’t planned the trip, it was spontaneous but I have never seen such striking colors and am not sure I ever will again.” Untamed landscapes, vibrant gorges, and a treasure trove of nature’s beauty – it was a journey that transcended expectations.

An Ingenious Twist and a Prize-Winning Tale

Sometimes, overland adventures come with their share of unexpected challenges, and the owner of BOB had some laughs thinking about some fun anecdotes. The story unfolds as BOB faces an unexpected exhaust pipe mishap in a quaint French village on the way to a party coming back from an adventure already covered in sand. Not one to let it dampen her spirits, our intrepid traveler’s resourcefulness shines through. “So, I found two metal coat hangers, crawled underneath and tied the exhaust pipe to line up with the box. Job done and off I went. When I arrived at the party I was not only covered in sand from the beach but grime from the underneath of the truck!” Who knew that ingenuity could lead to a night of laughter and a prize for resourcefulness?

Connections Beyond the Road: Insights for Your Journey

For solo explorers, human connections are the lifeline. Pause to converse with fellow travelers, bridging gaps with shared stories – language need not be a barrier. If companions accompany you, savor both togetherness and solitude, for this journey thrives on personal growth and shared experiences.

Insights from a Seasoned Explorer

Curious about overland travel tips? Here’s some wisdom from a seasoned explorer: “It really depends where you are planning to travel and if you are alone or not.” Whether you’re solo or with a partner, the key is balance. “For people traveling alone, make sure you build in stops to meet with people and not get cabin fever.” And for those with companions, it’s about nurturing both togetherness and personal space. Remember, it’s not just about the journey; it’s about the human connections you make along the way.
